SURFACE PREPARATION: Cottage Paint is meant to go on a sealed, sound surface. If there is varnish missing and nicks and scrapes, these should be fixed before painting. Clean with Cottage Paint Cleaner, and leave to dry. If there are spots where the varnish is missing, or where you have filled with wood filler, seal these spots with CP Primer. Let dry overnight and now you are ready to paint. Before taking your doors off, number them, plus number your hinges, and take a photo of the doors in front of the numbered open cupboards. You remember where it all goes now, by the time the doors go back on, you may not. Set up your doors in a heated area, that is dust-free, and has room for the doors to dry. Make up a rack for the doors to dry on, check out this idea. : www.pinterest.ca/pin/273523377338612312/
PAINT
Original Cottage Paint: Start with a damp Cottage Paint brush, paint 1st. coat. Let dry, then paint second coat. Once coat #2 is dry ( 1 hour to an hour and a half, depending on humidity and temperature), use a damp wiping rag, and wipe the whole door in wide, sweeping strokes. This is like a wet sand, and will smooth out your paint surface and distress it. Once your cabinets and doors are completely dry, finish with Cottage Paint Satin Varnish. Cottage Paint is a low voc paint, which means 30 days for a full cure. It will be dry to the touch in 1 or 2 days, but paint is not durable as it has not had time to fully cure. We find it best to leave the doors off your cupboards for a week, then put them back on.
Serenity Cottage Paint : simply prep and paint.
Cottage Paint's new mineral paint is reinforced with acrylic and urethane for a very durable finish that offers great adhesion to glossy surfaces. Serenity is used for a nondistressed application, i.e. you just want your cupboards to look new. Start by cleaning your doors with Cottage Paint Furniture Clean & Prep, let doors dry. Follow the instructions on the bottle, you want to remove any waxy film or build-up of dirt or grime before painting your doors. This is one of the most important steps.
Apply 1 coat of Serenity paint on your cabinet door with a microfibre roller, then smooth out with our finishing brush. We sell a kit with a tray, roller, and 2 brushes. You need to put enough paint on your roller so that the paint will self level out. Let dry overnight. Check your door the next day, if you have any drips or blobs, you will have to do a bit of sanding. After you have cleaned up any sanding dust, apply another coat of Serenity. Let dry, and you are done. No need to top-coat with varnish. Read above section for curing times.
Serenity can be sprayed on with a commercial sprayer, and can be used on walls, and to paint trim and doors.
